Marianne Street Knighton Brackin of Flora, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on November 26th, 2024, at the age of 67 after an extended illness. She will be remembered for her love of preparing exceptional meals and outstanding talent in cooking and baking for holidays and special events. She was exceedingly creative and a master seamstress who loved to work with her hands. She loved her family, her friends, her community, and her pets. Most of all, she celebrated and loved her grandchildren.
She was born September 19, 1957, in Yazoo City, Mississippi to David and Irene Street of Eden, Mississippi. She is the youngest of four children. After high school, she married James Harvey Knighton of Centreville, Mississippi, and they had three children: Lynda, Lacy, and David. Her life’s journey led her to Glennville, Georgia, where she married Robert Benjamin Brackin and had a daughter, Lyndsay. Marianne graduated from Hinds Junior College and worked for many years as a dental assistant. After leaving the dental field, she became a homemaker where she spent most of her time being “Nanaw” to her grandchildren and caring for her family. After several years back in Mississippi, she returned to the workforce in 2016. Marianne, or Lou as the staff called her, began as a hostess at T’Beaux’s and worked her way to managing partner of Kelly Ray’s. After retirement from the restaurant industry, she enjoyed traveling, gardening and sampling new foods with her older sister, Lynda Breithaupt.
Marianne found joy with her family in baking and preparing holiday food. She will be remembered as someone whose kitchen was always filled with the comforting aroma of her delicious meals. She conveyed her love through her time in the kitchen, the food she prepared, and sharing family recipes with her children and grandchildren. Marianne’s artistic ability extended beyond her baking, as she brought her creative touch to everything she did, from crafting beautiful holiday decorations to sharing memorable holiday traditions. Her legacy of service and creativity brought joy and comfort to her family and will be missed by all. Her love of cooking and creating will live on in the hearts and homes of her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Irene Street; husbands, James Harvey Knighton and Robert Benjamin Brackin, and brother-in-law, Robert Breithaupt. She is survived by her children, Lynda (Micah) White of Starkville, MS; Lacy (Steven) Shuman of Hagan, GA; David (Jill) Knighton of Cedartown, GA; and Lyndsay (Zach) Deal of Auburn, AL; grandchildren, Rylan (Mary Kathryn) Moore of Broussard, LA, Corey, Tanner, and Lillie Moore of Starkville, MS; Avery and Sam White of Starkville, MS; Ashton Shuman of Birmingham, AL; Dannah, James Harvey, Daylynn, and Jones Knighton of Cedartown, GA; Mimi Deal of Auburn, AL; and great-grandchild John Red Moore of Broussard, LA; brothers Benny Street of Canton, MS, and Robert (Denise) of Brandon, MS, and sister Lynda Breithaupt of Flora, MS, and many nieces and nephews.
